The Race to Government Handouts

Klaus H Hemsath asked:

First we watched the bungling of the financial crisis. Then GM demands the AIG treatment. Now the energy industry is stomping at the bits to get its helping of taxpayer monies. We are witnessing the best engineered and most profitable scams in history in which the financial industry looted well over one trillion dollars of taxpayer money.

The spectacle is awesome. The amounts of money we are talking about are incomprehensible for the poor souls who are called upon to pay for the mess. In the meantime, banks are laundering taxpayer monies. CEO’s and investors are chuckling while comfortably looting the savings of the working stiffs. Who wants to run a decent business anymore? You just have to learn how to steal money, legally!

The media have already decided that GM is going to get the money. But bets are still being taken on who gets the loot in the “Energy Race to Riches”.

“Solar Electricity” and “Wind Power” are the two favorites. “Nuclear Power” has the best record but has been hobbled with a high handicap. And then there are “Electric Cars”, “CNG Cars”, and cars holding one person and one shopping bag. There is “Ethanol”, a former favorite, and a new offspring called “Cellulosic Ethanol”. Even “Public Transportation” has been trucked in to stand at the starting line. And then there are several losers that are guaranteed to get a share of the prize money for just participating.

Unfortunately, all present proposals for solving the energy crisis look more like a horse race with several highly touted favorites than a well conceived plan to prepare the USA and eventually the world for a new, long-lasting energy future.

In the following we leave the world of high stakes gambling with other people’s money, of special tax preferences, and with rules like “heads I win – tails you loose”.

Instead, we are going to look at some simple facts, try to learn from the past, and attempt to provide for the future.

The most pressing problem facing the US is the steady and accelerating drain of US currency to foreign, petroleum exporting countries. Every year the US pays more than half a trillion of dollars for imported crude oil. Additionally, we are going to spend more than a trillion dollars for the failed effort of gaining control of Middle East petroleum reserves. Continuing crude oil imports are increasing our indebtedness to hostile countries and are providing the monies for terrorists, who keep us under a permanent threat. Our efforts to neutralize these threats do not come cheap.

The conclusion is simple and has been drawn repeatedly; the USA must regain energy independence!

A few billion dollars, spent wisely over the last two decades, could have done wonders for energy independence. However, all efforts were successfully defeated by well connected lobbyists at home.

We can become genuinely energy independent by one single means only; we must produce energy on US lands!

The energy lobby says: it cannot be done. However, their opinion is biased at the tune of several trillion dollars. US energy industry fears low oil prices. There are approximately 25 billion barrels of petroleum left in US oil deposits. The US petroleum industry is looking at the difference between $175 and $75 per barrel. The difference represents a cool $2.5 trillion. When talking about trillions of dollars we are talking real money. This money is there for the taking!

The world and the US are going to run out of crude oil soon. It does not matter if it takes forty or seventy five years. Oil reserves will be depleted. End of discussion!

Energy drives world economies. Lack of energy will lead to the immediate collapse of economies. World energy consumption is still predominantly based on fossil fuels. Combustion of fossil fuels discharges huge amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which creates global warming. Global warming causes sea levels to rise, brings on worldwide climate changes, and will lead to global overheating when not stopped in the near future.

The world consumes energy in three forms; electric power, liquid fuels, and heating gases. We can generate electric power without harmful emissions with nuclear fuels, hydro power, wind power, and solar power. Wind power and solar power are still too expensive and must be further developed before they can and will take over most of electric power generation.

Intermittent wind and solar power cannot be used effectively as long as we have not succeeded in developing storage facilities for storing electric power in huge quantities. This technology has received minimal attention despite its tremendous profit potential.

Nature has made fossil fuels from biomass thousands and even millions of years ago. There is no reason that we cannot imitate nature. In fact, we have many more technical capabilities today than nature ever had. For mysterious reasons ($2.5 trillion?) there are no efforts to find out how nature converted biomass from fossil fuels. If we ever learn to mimic nature, we will have solved all our energy problems for the next several centuries.

Most importantly, we will be capable to convert free solar energy into abundant, inexpensive electric energy and into plentiful, affordable transportation fuels. We will still be able to cross oceans in airplanes, our national defense will not be threatened by lack of motor fuels, terrorists will run out of money, and everybody can buy cars one favors and can afford.

Keyword Research Part 2 – Understanding Keyword Competition

Posted by | Posted in Seo | Posted on 14-06-2009-05-2008

Competition research starts with analyzing your web pages to determine how competitive your site is both in general and for specific keywords. This is sometimes referred to as page strength. I should note that there are really two aspects to page strength, the general strength of a site and the specific strength of a page within the site. For the sake of simplicity, in this article I will use “web page” for both. The next step is to examine the keywords themselves to see how competitive they are. This is sometimes called keyword difficulty. Determining keyword difficulty is done partially by examining how competitive the pages are that rank well for this keyword, though other methods can be helpful as well. This can be tricky for two reasons.

1. No one other than that search engine designers knows how each search engine determines how competitive a site or page is and the search engine folks aren’t talking.

2. Each search engine has a different way of determining how competitive a site or page is. So, even if you could figure out one, it wouldn’t necessarily be so with the other search engines.

Despite these difficulties the search engines do give us some general information about what makes web pages competitive (what determines page strength). The competitive strength of a web page is determined by several factors including:

Age – Generally speaking, the older a site is the more value the search engines give it. New sites have a much harder time competing for keywords. Similarly, new pages start off less competitive, but, if the rest of your site is strong, new pages will quickly gain page strength.

Traffic – The more popular a site is, the more value the search engines give it. Getting more visitors (web traffic) to a website increases page strength.

Internal Linking Structure – The internal linking structure of a site is both a reference to the navigation menus and other forms of linking from one page of your site to another. This is an often-overlooked aspect of both site design and SEO. Don’t underestimate the value of a good internal link structure.

Inbound Links – The most prominent piece of the competition puzzle, inbound links (also called back links and incoming links) are a key component in determining a web page’s competitive strength. Generally, the more inbound links you have the better, but quantity isn’t as important as quality. Links from authoritative sites (Sites that are very competitive) are worth far more than links from lesser sites, and links from sites relevant to your keywords are worth more than links from unrelated sites. Also, you do not only need to consider the inbound links to the specific page you are optimizing, the links directed to other pages of your website will increase the overall competitive strength of the website and thus the individual pages of that site as well. (We’ll talk more about this in a future article on link building.)

These are some of the key elements to determining a page’s competitive strength. As you can see this is starting to get complicated. There are some online tools available to help, but there is a wide range of ideas about what is important and how important each element is. Instead of using just one tool, you may want to use several. It will take longer, but may give you a more accurate assessment. In the end, if you keep track of your keyword research and your results, you may find one tool is more accurate than the others and be able to trust that tool over the others. This can help you determine how competitive your page or site is and whether you have a chance at ranking well for a particular keyword at this time. By looking at how competitive the other web pages are that currently rank well for a keyword, you can compare that to how competitive your page is. If your page is about as competitive as the other sites, you should be able to rank well for that keyword after targeting that keywords with search engine optimization. If the other sites are stronger than your site, then you should choose less competitive keywords until you’ve improved the strength of your web page. If the other sites are weaker, then the keyword is a sitting duck.

Other Ways to Determine Keyword Difficulty:

Adwords: In addition to evaluating the other web pages competing for the keywords you want, it can be helpful when attempting to determine how competitive a keyword is to look at other sources such as pay-per-click search marketing stats. Google Adwords has a tool that will show you the estimated cost per click to rank well in the paid search results for a keyword. If that cost per click is high, that’s an indication the keyword difficulty may be high as well (it’s also an indication that the keyword is valuable).

Keyword Effectiveness Index: Another way some people determine keyword difficulty is the Keyword Effectiveness Index (KEI). KEI values are usually available with keyword popularity tools. The KEI compares the number of searches a keyword gets to the number of results that keyword brings up in a search engine. If a keyword gets 100 searches a day and a search on Google returns 1000 results, then the Google KEI will be high, indicating the keyword is probably worth targeting. On the other hand if a keyword gets 100 searches a day and a search on Google returns 1,000,000 results, the Google KEI will be much lower, indicating the keyword may not be worth targeting. A lower search popularity will also effect the KEI Keywords with the same number of results in Google will have a higher or lower Google KEI depending on whether the keyword gets searched for more or less, respectively.

Tip: KEI can be used as part of the keyword difficulty research; however, I don’t recommend using solely this information as it isn’t necessarily an accurate indication of how difficult ranking for a keyword will be. After all, just because 100,000 pages are returned as results for a keyword, it doesn’t mean they are strong pages and it doesn’t mean any of the pages are well optimized for that keyword. A keyword could have 100,000 weak sites in the results. So, it could be easy to rank well for that keyword. Similarly, a keyword could have only 1000 sites in the results, but if 100 of them are very strong sites, then ranking well for that keyword could be very difficult

By understanding how competitive keywords are and how strong your website is, you will be able to optimize for keywords that your site can compete for immediately to get some immediate results. You will also be able to properly devise what additional work (primarily targeted link building) you will need to perform to be able to compete for more competitive keywords.

Learning The Basics Of RSS

Posted by | Posted in Technology | Posted on 05-06-2009-05-2008

Jeremiah Patton asked:

What is RSS? You probably have seen this three-letter acronym in the course of your internet surfing. RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary; syndicating means republishing an article that comes from another source such as a website.

An RSS is a means of publicizing updates about websites. It may or may not include a summary and photos of the latest posting. But those that provide summaries (thus Rich Site Summary) allow users to skim through the article so that they could decide later on if they want to access the website source. The RSS feed usually contains the title of the update originating from the website. It is also usually the link to the website source.

What are the benefits of RSS? RSS gives benefits to both readers (users) and web publishers. 1.It gives you the latest updates. Whether it is about the weather, new music, software upgrade, local news, or a new posting from a rarely-updates site learn about the latest as soon as it comes out.

2.It saves on surfing time. Since an RSS feed provides a summary of the related article, it saves the user’s time by helping s/he decide on which items to prioritize when reading or browsing the net.

3.It gives the power of subscription to the user. Users are given a free-hand on which websites to subscribe in their RSS aggregators which they can change at any time they decide differently.

4.It lessens the clutter in your inbox. Although your email address will be required to enjoy the services of online RSS aggregators, RSS does not use your email address to send the updates.

5.It is spam free. Unlike email subscriptions, RSS does not make use of your email address to send updates thus your privacy is kept safe from spam mails.

6.Unsubscribing is hassle-free. Unlike email subscriptions where the user is asked questions on why s/he is unsubscribing and then the user would be asked to confirm unsubscribing, all you have to do is to delete the RSS feed from your aggregator.

7.It can be used as an advertising or marketing tool. Users who subscribe or syndicate product websites receive the latest news on products and services without the website sending spam mail. This is advantageous to both the web user and the website owner since advertising becomes targeted; those who are actually interested in their products are kept posted.

What are the drawbacks of RSS? The disadvantages of RSS use are brought about by its being a new technology and some user-preference concerns. 1.Some users prefer receiving email updates over an RSS feed.

2.Graphics and photos do not appear in all RSS feeds. For conciseness and ease of publication, RSS feeds do not display the photos from the original site in announcing the update except for some web-based aggregators

3.The identity of the source website can be confusing. Since RSS feeds do not display the actual URL or name of the website, it can sometimes get confusing on what feed a user is actually reading.

4.Publishers cannot determine how many users are subscribed to their feed and the frequency of their visits. Moreover, they would not know the reasons why users unsubscribe which could be important in improving their advertising.

5.RSS feeds create higher traffic and demands on the server. Most readers still prefer the whole update over a brief summary of the entry, thus they still access the site.

6.Since it is a new technology, many sites still do not support RSS.

How do I start using RSS? There are two things needed: an RSS feed and an RSS aggregator or reader. The RSS feed comes from an RSS-supported website. There are also websites that provide a list of RSS feeds of different websites. An RSS aggregator is used to read the RSS feed from the source website. It scans and collects data on latest RSS feeds from the worldwide web.

An aggregator comes in two forms: a downloadable program also known as desktop aggregator and an online or web-based aggregator. Downloadable aggregators may require payment before they can be acquired, while internet-based aggregators are usually free of charge. All you need to do is to register an account then you are ready to use their services. Both versions allow you to customize or choose which RSS feeds to enter. Paid aggregators are usually chosen by more experienced users and they usually allow more freedom in customizing feeds.

1.Choose an RSS aggregator to use. For beginners, web-based aggregators are recommended since they are usually user-friendly

2.Scan the homepage of your target website for the RSS or XML button. It contains the RSS code you need to enter in the aggregator. Copy this code. Syndic8 provides a directory of websites that support RSS.

3.Paste the code (which contains the URL of the website) in your aggregator. There is a space provided for pasting the code.

After you have done these three easy steps, you can start reading the RSS feeds coming from the website. New postings appear as they are published real time at the source website.

RSS and Internet Marketing

The original idea of RSS came from Netscape, where their intention is to provide a means for users to customize their personal homepage to contain links to websites that interest them, similar to bookmarking websites.

The application of RSS to internet marketing was an unforeseen development to RSS technology developers. Since users are given the freedom to add RSS feeds to their aggregators, those who are interested in particular products and services available in the internet can now be notified real time. Marketing becomes more specific to interested people and not a hit-and-miss operation.

Those who intend to use RSS for marketing their products and services should consider linking up with email account providers, (e.g. Yahoo, MSN, Google mail); networking websites (e.g. Friendster, Multiply, My Space, Hi5); websites of newspapers and television network websites (e.g. New York Times, CNN) for medium to big-scale companies. Small-time industries can also look into networking websites as well as personal blog websites (e.g. Blogspot) and websites of clubs and organizations that would probably make use of their products or services e.g. a fishing supplies store can look for the website of their local fishing club for possible RSS marketing.

Clearly, RSS is an innovation in information management in the worldwide web as well as online marketing. We can expect better RSS technology in the not-so-distant future as its popularity increases among users and website owners alike.
